Our first kittens!

We took in our first group of kittens to foster yesterday! Two tiny grey girls and an orange boy. They're ridiculously small. I can't get over how little the tiniest one weighs. The space we're keeping them in is small, but apparently it was preferable to keep them in our bathroom rather than our second bedroom. The lady running the rescue group explained that if they have too much space, they're more likely to run around and wear themselves out, and we would have a harder time socializing them when they're always darting away from us - in the bathroom, there isn't really anywhere to run away from us to!

Anyway, we had to give the little suckers N names. So we gave the orange boy the name "Nathan," the fluffier grey girl "Natalie," and the darker grey tabby-looking girl "Neko." They've got such big personalities even though they're so young! Nathan likes to groom his sisters, get belly rubs, and he purrs super loud. He's also quite heavier than the other two. Natalie is the more skittish of the group, hissing the first day at us when we wanted to pet her. She accepts pets once you start though. Neko is the friendliest, coming right up to us for pets! Neko is very small, but she's been eating well so I'm hoping for the best.

Each of them loves to play with the toys that we brought home with them. They chase them around, roll them, knock them into each other, and even lay on them like they were pillows. I love that despite being so young and is little, they can do so much!

The little plates that we brought home are incredibly helpful. They're like upside-down frisbees, so they can't be knocked over by tiny paws, and it's easy to spread out their food so that all three kittens can eat at once around the bowl. We've been keeping dry food available for them, and feeding them half a can of wet food twice a day, with some kitten formula and lysine mixed in. Hopefully this will keep them growing optimally! I am going to be so sad to see them go when we leave in three weeks. We will be going to Florida to get married and have fun at Disney World, but I will miss these little dudes. James thinks we might get the same group when we come back and are ready to foster some more, but we will see! I'm not sure at what age they will be ready for adoption, but I can't see them waiting long to be snatched up. They're such dolls.

Today, James' mom came over to see the kittens and was thrilled by them. She snuggled and pet them, and Neko definitely enjoyed the attention. Nathan and Natalie not so much, but they'll come around. They're here to be socialized, after all. They seem to be warming up to me and James okay, though it will definitely take some time for Natalie. Nathan is a little skittish, but enjoys being pet too much to run away once the pets start. After their second wet meal today, they all snuggled up in their crate for a nap, but Neko didn't stay asleep for long. She played with several toys, one after the other, and even attacked her shadow! At one point she started batting at Natalie through the crate door and Natalie sleepily batted back. It was ridiculously cute. They're all napping again now, though. I spent several hours hanging out with them last night, and probably will again tonight - I want them to get used to me! Okay, now I'm going to figure out how to add pictures to this thing. Normally that wouldn't be tough, but I'm on my phone and have no idea how well it will cooperate with me on this. If it comes down to it I'll do it on my computer later tonight.

Edit: I had to get on the computer after all. Here are the pics - click on them for bigger versions!
